PostSubject: What is the best gaming headset for 64 bit Win 8.1   Sun Mar 29, 2015 5:34 am

Greetings all;

I bought a new 64 bit gaming machine in January equipped with Windows 8.1 and immediately found that my trusted Logitech G930 headset wouldn't work with it. So I've decided to retire the G930 and buy something next generation.

I would appreciate receiving your opinions are the best gaming headsets for Window 8 and 8.1 64 bit systems.

Many thanks,
Ollie

Wow Toxic, those sound pretty sweet. But I'm hoping to find a set with an integrated mic and I think, notwithstanding the technology, such high fidelity would be wasted on me (thanks to my range work my hearing isn't what it used to be).

I'm still open to suggestions, or a sampling of what the guys use themselves when they game.

Many thanks Toxic,
Ollie

Actually I use them for music as well Smile but found them particularly good at getting a BIGGER sound stage of where people are in the Game as my hearing is not so great either......Oh so my Wife Says ...lol

Not my review, but thought I would mention Open Back headphones sound much more spacious than closed headphones, and I don't feel any headphones meant for gaming can compare.

I'll agree with Toxic on the information he posted and what he says. "Gaming headsets" aren't always the greatest quality, but if sound quality doesn't matter as much to you, you can go for anything you want for a cheaper set. For a long time I was buying turtle beach gaming headsets, they were fine, they'd normally break around the ear piece after 6-12 months though from heavy use, and tended to make my ears hurt (I have big ears).

Currently I'm using Audio Technica AD700X headphones, as well as 3 of the headphones listed on Toxic's list are by the same brand. Go watch/read any review on them and it'll tell you something along lines of "They have great mids, good for hearing footsteps, etc. etc." and it's true. I don't personally like the amount of bass they have, but that's just how my ears are, and I've changed my sound settings to cut a lot of that out, and I love the sound quality on these things. Perhaps not the greatest for everything, I still really enjoy them for music, movies, and everything else sound related. If you're serious about a good quality headphones, it's worth it, I got mine for around $100 from the $200 they're generally listed as, they go on sale A LOT. Just get a desk/clip on mic to go with it, usually it's not a huge issue not having a mic right on your face.

A few negatives, just because nothing is perfect and I'll tell you front up about what I have used: I'm not a fan of how the Audio Technica headphones sit on my head, they're a bit loose, not really that adjustable, even with their (strange) pads that rest on your head. I also haven't seen anything on the recent releases of Audio Technica's gaming headsets that came out within the last year, worth a look.

The open back headphone designs are nice though, they let your ears breath a lot better for long gaming sessions, I've heard with some people the closed back ones have actually caused ear infections if I remember correctly? If you have anywhere that sells headphones, go see if you can try them out. There are a few places around here that either have display models or some of the music stores let me try them on/and suggested I bring my phone/ipod to test the sound with it with music or whatever. Obviously that's not gonna be everywhere, but especially at a music store when you're gonna be investing hundreds of dollars on headphones, they're generally more willing to help you out. Even the bestbuy here had a bunch of headphones or display, I tried out the Sennheister headphones, found out they're WAY too small for me, but I don't know what is available where you live or BC in general.

PostSubject: Top 5 Headphones   Sun Apr 19, 2015 5:44 am

Big thank yous to Toxic and Over. The links are excellent and courtesy of Over's comments, I have a great deal to think about before buying a new set.

Out of curiosity, what operation system are you guys using on your PC's with your headphones?

Thanks again,
Ollie

I'm on Windows 7. I don't believe there should be any compatibility issues with many headphones, as a lot of higher quality headphones just use normal audio plugs, not USB, but it is always something to check online or the back of boxes about. USB headsets are generally the only ones you have to worry about for compatibility sake, because they use their own sound drivers to work through the USB, but anything like that should list what operating systems it works on.

If it doesn't use USB another big concern is making sure it has a normal 3.5 mm, an adapter that comes with it, or picking one up yourself, because I know a lot of them come with the big 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) plugs. For an example, the Sennheiser 558 headphones are listed with "Jack plug: 6.3mm" but at the same time also says "3.5mm plug adapter" in the box. Research is important, it's never fun when you spend a bunch of money on something that ends up not working.

The basic types are of headphones are

Closed backs - are better on noise suppression (notice I didn't say Noise cancellation)
Open - are better for the details & sound-stage
Semi-Open - are somewhere in between open and closed

Circum-aural - Headphones that sit around your ears (my preference)
Supra-aural - Headphones that sit on your ears (these hurt my ears if worn extensively)

higher efficiency (for example: 102 dB/1 mW) less power required
lower efficiency (for example: 91 dB/mW) more power required (you may need to buy an headphone amp)

Noise-canceling circuitry – Electronics in the headphones create a noise-cancelling wave that is 180° out of phase with the ambient noise. This wave acts like a noise eraser as the electronics re-creates the sound but out of phase thus it cancels out that sound, some would say without diminishing the audio you want to hear - (not my cup of tea, and do feel the diminish the sound).

I'm using a set of steelseries siberia v2s. Excellent headset that lasts forever. I've had mine for 5 years now lol. No problems except the usb sound card died but that was cheap. I use them everyday too. Kinda want to get their newer frost blue edition.

Hey Crow, Some how I would think you already knew this stuff given your tech savy mind ..Smile

But also keep in mind lower efficiency speakers for lets say a surround system follows the same basic rules and often you will find that surround speakers are about 86 db (not very efficient) decrease in  3db would take twice the power in watts to get the same volume

86 dB=decibles / 1W/M = 1watt 1 meter , so that is a MIC placed 1 meter away from the speaker with the volume at 1 watt, this is done with a directional MIC.

Watts increase exponentially, loudspeaker that has a sensitivity of 96dB 1watt/1meter, is going to give you 6 more dB of output (really like a few clicks on the knob increase) than one with a sensitivity rating of 90dB 1watt/1meter, given both are receiving the same wattage, same Amp really as how an amp is ratted can be tricky as well

Not enough power output in an Amp can be more damaging than too much power, as trying to turn something up higher than the amp is capable of with clean (non-Clipping) Power can do damage to your speakers, in short you can always stop turning the knob to the right when you have more power than you need.

Thank you all for your excellent input.

In the end I opted for the GAMDIAS Hephaestus headset w/ mic for it's Windows 8.1 specific software and general specs.  So far I can say they are extremely comfortable and provide decent eight channel sound and work with Windows 8.1 flawlessly.  I haven't tested it with someone coming up behind me yet but I will when I can get back into the game.  Many thanks to the many contributors.

Cheers, Ollie
